SELECTING THE RIGHT GO-BAG

If there is anything scarier than facing a disaster it must be facing a disaster unprepared. So when you have a SHTF moment that is worthy of a J.J Abrams movie adaptation, I want you to be prepared. That’s why I am going to cover selecting the right survival Backpack(GO-BAG)…the backpack you will need in case you have to “GTFO” quickly. With a little bit of planning you will be prepared for whatever disaster comes your way. Most experts suggest that your GO-BAG should contain enough supplies to last you seventy two hours,so you're going to need a sturdy and comfortable survival pack to haul you're gear with. You can have all the  survival equipment the in the world at your home, but it wont do you any good if you cant carry it with you when you have to bug-out.
Now with thousands of Backpacks on the market, how do you pick the right one?To help you make the right decision when you go to choose your GO-BAG,Critical Edge has a few factors for you to keep in mind.

FITMENT:
When choosing you're GO-BAG,The most important factor is going to be your GO-BAG'S fitment to your body. You;re going to focus on your torso length, not your overall height. To measure your torso,
  • Have a friend locate the bony bump at the base of your neck, where the slope of your shoulder meets your neck. This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra. Tilt your head forward to locate it more easily. This is the top of your torso length.
  • Place your hands on top of your hips. The location on your spine between the tops of your hip bones is the bottom of your torso length. With your hands comfortably on your hips, it is the location your thumbs point to.
  • Using a flexible tape measure, your friend should measure the distance between the C7 and an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. You now should have your torso length.
Use your torso length measurement to find your best pack size.Because every manufacturer uses different size naming conventions, this little chart can be used to help you pick the right size. Generally, manufacturers size their pack frames something like this:
  • Extra Small: Fits torsos up to 15 ½"
  • Small: Fits torsos 16" to 17½"
  • Medium/Regular: Fits torsos 18" to 19½"
  • Large/Tall: Fits torsos 20" and up
More than likely when you have to BUG-OUT,you more than likely will be carrying a heavy load and you''ll want the large majority of the weight to sit on your hips, not your shoulders and using a hip belt will really save your back and shoulders. Most packs come with a dedicated, non-detachable hip belt that will fit a wide range of hip sizes. If you need a custom size, choose a pack with a detachable hip belt,so you can swap it out for one that properly fits you.

CAPACITY:
Your GO-BAG should be able to carry three day's worth of food, water and other survival gear,so your bag should range in the 30-to50-liter (approximately 1,830-3,050 cubic inches) size category.Your bag size will be dependent on your body size as well as how much weight you are able to carry.Know remember that the more gear and essentials you carry, the heavier your load will be.

FEATURES:
There are many bags on the market with different features so you will need to figure out which features you will need. Some bags have built-in compression straps so you can compress your overloaded bag to make for a less bulky pack.while others include an internal hydration bladder. Some bags have padded compartments for your electronic gear such as your GPS and radio units. Many even come equipped with military-style MOLLE webbing, allowing you to customize your GO-BAG with modular pouches.Do you want lockable zippers or a wet compartment to keep your wet clothes or shoes separate from your dry items? These are all things you have to take into consideration when your choosing a GO-BAG to meet your individual need.

REGIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:
When you choose your survival backpack(GO-BAG),you need to take into consideration the region you live in,as well.Do you live in an area prone to hurricanes, tornadoes,or earthquakes? What are the seasons like?Does it snow?Do you need  something waterproof?Or maybe you live in a dry desert region and don't need the waterproofing, instead  you should  pick a light-weight ventilated bag.You must keep all of these things in mind to choose a GO-BAG that will be work for you.

QUALITY:
You get what you pay for in life,we all know there is cheaply made stuff and there is the high quality stuff. If you have been looking at survival bag's  you will notice that the most common material that is used for heavy-duty backpacks is some type of nylon.
Nylon comes in many forms and fits many different applications such as:

PACK CLOTH NYLON:
Which a smooth nylon material with threads of equal diameter running in the warp (vertical) and fill (horizontal) directions. It's somewhat shiny and slick to the touch. Many packs utilize this material, and a great number of daypack styles as well. It's not as popular as it used to be, but it's a perfectly good pack fabric. The chief advantages of pack cloth nylon are it's ready acceptance of urethane waterproofing, abrasion resistance, and excellent puncture resistance. The downside is that it can be a somewhat heavy fabric when compared to the other nylons.

CORDURA NYLON:

Cordura is an "air treated" nylon fabric originally designed by DuPont. It's characterized by a rough, fuzzy texture on the outside, and a somewhat rough texture on the inside. By far, it's the most popular fabric in use today for both backpacks and daypacks. The chief advantages of Cordura fabric are its abrasion resistance and light weight. It's not as puncture resistant as Oxford-weave nylon and doesn't accept waterproofing as well, but it's also a perfectly good pack fabric. (Keep in mind, we're talking about degrees of difference here. Coated Cordura fabric is considered "waterproof" just as Oxford-weave fabric is considered waterproof.)

RIP-STOP NYLON:

Rip-stop Nylon is starting to emerge in the marketplace, and more companies will probably be using it before long. Rip-stop nylon is easily distinguished by its regular "grid" pattern of heavy threads sewn in the warp and fill directions every quarter-inch. The heavy threads "stop rips" if the pack is punctured or torn. Nylon, when torn, has a tendency to start unraveling. If you're deep in the back country with no thread or duct tape, a torn pack can present an interesting challenge in carrying your gear. A torn nylon pack put under stress by 50 pounds of equipment, can quickly start to come apart. The "rip-stopping" design of rip-stop nylon can provide extra protection to help ensure that your pack won't disintegrate in front of your eyes the first five miles down the trail. The main advantages of rip-stop nylon are it's ready acceptance of waterproofing and it's lightness in weight. It's not as puncture resistant as pack cloth nylon, but just about as abrasion resistant. However, since rip-stop is typically used in lighter fabric weights, holes from prolonged abrasion in one spot may appear sooner than pack cloth nylon.

Now that you know about about the different types of nylon there are other important details to look at including zippers and plastic buckles on almost every single bag on the market today.Make sure that the zippers perform smoothly and reliably when pulled at different speeds and angles.Plastic buckles should feel sturdy and have positive indication that they are locked into place. We have noticed  that name-brand  bags that feature YKK zippers ITW buckles to be excellent choices.
You can't be certain of what type of disaster or emergency your going to face or when it;s going to happen. All we can do is anticipate and prepare for what ever mother nature throws at us. A survival backpack along with  disaster planning, preparation the right equipment and supplies, a quality comfortable GO-BAG should be the backbone of your survival gear. There are many choices so please don't turn into a disaster trying to plan for a disaster, with a little patience, will find find a GO-BAG to fit your needs.

Learn to Maximize the Minimum

The Critical Edge Defense Solutions staff is always prepping and preparing because no one knows when tragedy will strike so have to be able to think fast and react even faster. When a SHTF moment happens and you find that you need to GTFO in a moments notice, you probably are not going to have the time or space to pack alot in your vehicle. In case you don't have a GO-BAG ready, you can follow these tips by packing ultra-light in a gallon plastic bag.

WATER:
Water is an absolute must for survival, so it's essential that when you rush out of your house in a SHTF scenario you have a way to hydrate your self.I'm not talking about having 20 gallons of water in your bag because that is not ideal,so be sure to have a water filter that allows you to make any water you come across drinkable. you have several options like using a Life Straw or Aquamira, These will not take up any room in your bag and will will eliminate almost every biological threat in North America.
In addition, water purification tablets also work great at eliminating pesky bacteria from water. In Leiu of this you could make sure you have more garbage bags and a small bottle of bleach or iodine. Both of these options are effective in purifying water by mixing two drops of bleach or five drops of iodine per one liter of water.
The water must be clear for both options so pack a small bag of coffee filters to filter your water through but if you need to you can crude filter through a T-Shirt or bandanna.Just be sure to wait 30 minutes before you consume your treated water.

SHELTER:
Shelter is another key element to survival,so unless you have a bat cave or BUG-OUT location prepared, you should pack a military style poncho with grommeted corners. This can help serve as a make shift shelter. An emergency space blanket is better than nothing and can be used as a poncho, gear cover, shelter, ground cover or even be used as a rain collection tarp.
Para cord is also a must have in your bag to help with building shelter.(para-cord is actually eight lenghts of rope-comprised of the seven inner strands and the outside sheath).
Don't freak out if you don't have para cord because any rope will work for a shelter line.
now if you run out of the house and you don't have any para cord or rope at least grab your floss so you can floss while you hang your shelter line because floss has a tensile strength of 20 pounds and a roll normally holds a 100 yards so you should be okay.

FIRE MAKING:
In a SHTF situation a fire will be in high demand on those cold nights so be prepared by packing a disposable lighter,a ferro rod and some cotton balls mixed with petroleum jelly in your pack.
these cotton balls  will ignite with just a spark and  burn for at least seven minutes giving you time to get your logs burning so cook any fish, meat or veggies you come across.

SELF DEFENSE:
Now once your all warm and cozy by your fire you should have some protection to defend your self so packing a small hand gun would make a good choice if you have one.
If you don't have a gun you should at least have a  knife in your bag. A knife will be very important bug-out tool that will get a lot of use.I prefer to carry a fixed blade for durability but a folder will work if its all that is available

LIGHT:
Light will be a necessity so pack a good dual output led flash light. even a small key chain led light will work for small storage spaces so you can have something to use for night time travel or work.

MOTHER NATURE:
If you have the skill and ability to adapt, all your needs can be attained from nature but unless you're an avid hiker or camper, the chances are that you don't have the experience and knowledge to survive this way.
so I suggest you read The Ultimate Survival Manual (Outdoor Life): 333 Skills that Will Get You Out Alive

Survival Clothing

Survival Fashion
Survival Fashion
The list of survival clothing can get very long and expensive. And the premises for my blog regarding clothing is to First  encourage proper dress when going into a potential survival situation; and secondly is to have suitable clothing incorporated into your bug-out bag or car survival kit if you are forced to flee at a moments notice. What is going to happen If you are suddenly caught in a earthquake or other natural disaster common in your area and have to GTFO of your house dressed in your fuzzy silk P.J’S and Cute Little Bunny slippers and only you’re your GO-BAG in hand, what is the weather like outside? Is it warm sunny summer day? Or is it in the cold rain or dead of winter in a blizzard? Do you really want to picture the thought of yourself hiking through the boonies in your silk P.J’s or shooting hordes of zombies in your Bunny Slippers? Don’t Laugh Cause it could happen to anyone. But not you because you took the time to prepare a GO-BAG with the right gear.
Don't forget this is your kit and you can change the contents as you think best to accommodate the seasons. Regardless of the need for your survival clothing you need to keep in mind your:
  •  Local or planned environment.
  • Time of year regarding climate.
  • Space and weight limitations.
  • COST:  WHAT CAN YOU AFFORD
One of the current philosophies regarding outdoor clothing is the layering concept; wherein a variety of lighter weight materials are used to layer your body. These allow for a range of temperature and body moisture changes and are pretty lightweight overall. With the advent of modern materials this seems to be an ideal solution for inclusion in any bug-out bag; however, the cost of some of the new materials is rather high.
Materials: If cost is a factor or you decide to use your "surplus normal clothing", consider the materials of your clothing. "Cotton kills" is a common saying among outdoors and survival books and rightfully so. In most temperate climates I suggest a light weight wool pants and shirt. They are warmer in the winter than jeans and even the people who live in the Sahara Desert in the above 100 degree weather prefer wool. The scales on the outside of wool fibers break up surface tension, and resist wetting. The lanolin (oil) on wool also helps resist water, and in olden days, oiled wool sweaters (with extra lanolin added back after the material was made) were the standard for cold, wet conditions.
Clothing fit: Tight clothing in any situation restrict your movements, is very uncomfortable after wearing for awhile (i.e. emergency shelter) and can cause pressure sores and even boils in extended wear. I would not pack baggy clothing that seems to catch or get caught on every bush, stick or damaged building materials. I suggest forgetting the cargo pants, over-sized shirts and the billowing skirts.
What to Wear: The basic clothing to include in your kit is a long sleeve shirt and extra pants and with a change of underwear and socks. I also suggest a down vest (very warm, rather cheap, and compresses into a very small package) &/or a wool sweater. Deserts and even jungle mountains get cold at night. Hypothermia is a constant danger anytime the temperature gets as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Toss in rain and perhaps not being able to have a fire and  your first night out its going to be cold and miserable on top of all the stress from what ever the SHTF moment made you leave home in the first place. (Remember you are planning on surviving under extreme SHTF circumstances).
Gloves: Sturdy work gloves are recommended as it would be good to have a pair around for doing chores such as moving that debris out of the way, woodcraft in the unforgiving wilderness, and warmth.
Boots: Toss in a pair of boots that you've broken in and are completely comfortable in wearing because the blisters that you will form from trying to break in the boots in a survival scenario will present a danger. Military combat boots are probably going to be a good bet as well. They'll hold up in combat and they're extremely comfortable.
A belt: Again, simple, but overlooked. In addition to their original intent, which is still quite important (holding up your pants), the belt can give you a place to hang holsters, survival packs, and in worst case scenarios can be used as a very effective tourniquet or rigging.
A hat: Preferably a floppy hiking style hat. Assuming that your survival is spent out of doors a simple hat will work wonders to help prevent sunburn because a nasty sunburn on the back of ones neck can limit the range of motion to the head and cause a distracting bit of easily avoided discomfort. Consider a Gore-Tex hat if cost is not an issue. Not only will it keeps you dry, but you can also carry water in it.
A bandanna:  I suggest packing one into any survival kit.  Because even if you don’t wear it, a bandanna can make for an excellent second hat, neck protection, worn as a dust mask, signaling tool, bandage, tourniquet or a number of other uses that may present themselves.
Basic principles of cold weather survival: It is going to be more difficult for you to satisfy your basic water, food and shelter needs in a cold environment than in a warm environment. Even if you have the basic requirements, you must also have adequate protective clothing to survive.
You must not only have enough clothing to protect you from the cold, you must also know how to maximize the warmth you get from it. For example, always keep your head covered. You can lose 40 percent to 45 percent of body heat from an unprotected head and even more from the unprotected neck, wrists and ankles. These areas of the body are good radiators of heat and have very little insulating fat. "If your feet are cold, put a hat on" is a very old and true statement. The body will rob peripheral blood supply to keep the brain at a constant temperature thereby allowing the hands and feet to go cold (or even freeze) and then the extremities.
There are four basic principles to follow to keep warm. An easy way to remember these basic principles is to use the word "COLD":
C - Keep clothing clean.
O - Avoid overheating.
L - Wear clothes loose and in layers.
D - Keep clothing dry.
C - Keep clothing clean. This principle is always important for sanitation and comfort. In winter, it is also important from the standpoint of warmth. Clothes matted with dirt and grease loses much of their insulation value. Heat can escape more easily from the body through the clothing's crushed or filled up air pockets.
O - Avoid overheating. When you get too hot, you sweat and your clothing absorbs the moisture. This affects your warmth in two ways: dampness decreases the insulation quality of clothing and as sweat evaporates, your body cools. Adjust your clothing so that you do not sweat. Do this by partially opening your parka or jacket, by removing an inner layer of clothing, by removing heavy outer mittens or by throwing back your parka hood or changing to lighter headgear. The head and hands act as efficient heat dissipaters when overheated.
L - Wear your clothing loose and in layers. Wearing tight clothing and footgear restricts blood circulation and invites cold injury. It also decreases the volume of air trapped between the layers, reducing its insulating value. Several layers of lightweight clothing are better than one equally thick layer of clothing, because the layers have dead-air space between them. The dead-air space provides extra insulation. Also, layers of clothing allow you to take off or add clothing layers to prevent excessive sweating or to increase warmth.
D - Keep clothing dry. In cold temperatures, your inner layers of clothing can become wet from sweat and your outer layer, if not water repellent, can become wet from snow and frost melted by body heat. Wear water-repellent outer clothing, if available. It will shed most of the water collected from melting snow and frost. Before entering a heated shelter, brush off the snow and frost. Despite the precautions you take, there will be times when you cannot keep from getting wet. At such times, drying your clothing may become a major problem. You can place damp socks or mittens, unfolded, near your body so that your body heat can dry them. In a campsite, hang damp clothing inside the shelter near the top, using drying lines or improvised racks. You may even be able to dry each item by holding it before an open fire. Dry leather items slowly. If no other means are available for drying your boots, put them between your sleeping bag shell and liner. Your body heat will help to dry the leather.
I Should have taken that advice and packed my GO-BAG with clothes.
I Should have taken that  advice and packed my GO-BAG with clothes.
Survival Clothing: You'll probably never have to use animal skins for survival clothing. You might never lose your shoes and need to glue tree bark to your feet with pine sap for hiking. Still, knowing how to improvise a few basic pieces of survival clothing can make you more comfortable, and possibly save your life.
Usually, you'll do better to look first at what you have, before looking to kill animals for their skins, or weaving grass skirts. If you have a sleeping bag, it can double as a coat - just wrap it around you. Socks can be mittens, and garbage bags can be made into snow pants or used for a raincoat. Otherwise, you could tie bundles of grass tightly together along a string or strips of cloth, and then wrap it around your shoulders. This will repel a light rain. You can fashion a rain hood of birch bark as well.
In the desert you can make a sun-hat of large leaves, like those from a fan palm. String some together to wrap around your shoulders to prevent sunburn.
In the cold, insulation is the important principle here. You can stuff a jacket, shirt, sweater or pants with dry leaves, milkweed down, bracken ferns or almost anything that creates a lot of "dead air space." It's better if you have two layers to sandwich it between, but being itchy is better than being frozen in any case.
If you truly did not prepare for a true SHTF, you can also use the flat leaves of cattail plants to weave a vest that will block the wind and some rain. Two bread bags full of milkweed down or other silky plant fibers make warm mittens (tie them at the wrists). A plastic bag full of the same could be tied onto your head as a hat.
When trekking off into a wilderness area or preparing your BUG-OUT BAG -out or car kit, ensure your plans incorporate proper survival clothing because you are going to be embarrassed when you get caught with your pants down in a social setting, But getting caught with your pants down in a SHTF situation can cost you and your family your lives
BE PREPARED!

BASIC FIRST-AID 101

FIRST-AID 101
FIRST-AID 101
Accidents are going to happen, No matter how prepared you are and During a SHTF scenario you may have to be your own doctor. I have been around a few major disasters where the majority of wounded people suffered simple soft tissue injuries and burns that could have been treated on their own,-If they knew how.”
With these simple and effective tips you “will know how” increasing your chance of survival. The most important thing to do if you suffer an injury that develops a wound in your skin,is to clean it by irrigating it with a continuous jet of clean water.
By irrigating the wound with water you are going to remove debris more effectively and with less risk of tissue damage or contamination than by washing or swabbing the wound with soap and water.
To be well equipped in any situation you will want to make sure you have an irrigation syringe and some catheter tubing in your first aid kit. This will allow you to attach the tubing to the nozzle of the syringe allowing you spray a constant pressurized stream of water onto the wound.
If for some reason you don’t have these items you can improvise with a plastic bag filled with water that has a small hole in it so you can squeeze the stream of water onto the wound.
You need to avoid the temptation to reach for antiseptics like alcohol or iodine to clean the wound, because along with the germs you will be killing the healthy cells that would be otherwise used in the healing process.
Now if you or a loved one should suffer wounds caused by burns, you are going to want to cool the affected area as quickly as possible to stop additional damage.
(Red and painful) First-degree and second-degree (blistered) can be treated like wounds as early described: wash and cover them. In the event of second-degree burns, try to leave the blisters intact, but if they do break, just treat them as wounds.
Despite what your mother told you, you are not food so avoid using butter or oil as remedies because they can actually be harmful. So put down the butter and stick with antibiotic ointment and a bandage.
Now god forbid you do get a third degree-burn (charred skin) keep them clean and moist and keep the victim hydrated until medical help arrives.
After irrigating and cleansing your wound, you’ll want to treat it with triple antibiotic ointment and cover it with dressing so you can keep the wound clean and free from any additional damage.
Use adhesive bandages for small wounds and gauze pads secured with adhesive tape for large ones. If you have any trouble getting your bandages to stick either from activity or from wet conditions apply a small amount tincture of Benzoin to help make the adhesive stick. Make sure to change the dressing at least once a day.
Now if you happen to get a deep cut, don’t get all holly wood and try stitch the wound in the field with a makeshift suture like the hero in an action movie. You’re more than likely to cause an infection. Instead just lightly close the wound with butterfly strips.
Thank you

Basic Navigation 101

IGRF 2000 magnetic declination map. Source: ht...
Compass usage illustration

If you are serious about survival and you don’t have navigation skill it’s time to put down your hand held GPS unit or smart phone and develop this critical real world navigation skill so you are able to take the lines, numbers and colors you see on your map and compass and be able to apply it to your environment.
When a true SHTF scenario happens I recommend taking these steps to help you gain the Critical Edge to increase your chances of survival.
 Step 1: Situational Awareness
During a SHTF scenario in a highly populated urban jungle, Situational Awareness is going to be crucial if you want to survive. You are going to need to know where you are, what your resources are and what the dangers are around you.
You are going to need to have a sense of where the four cardinal directions are, either by instinct, Looking at your compass or map, or by using old-school navigation techniques (I.E. looking at the sun or the North Star in the sky).
I urge you to really develop your skills of situational awareness & stay alert in your everyday lives. You should become familiar with your surroundings and realize that they are navigation tools.
 Step 2: Asses the Situation
Don’t freak and dwell on the disaster or SHTF scenario that is making you GTFO. You are going to have to focus on what’s going on (again situational awareness) so you can figure the best direction that you’ll want to travel through the urban jungle of skyscrapers, streets and sidewalks.
Step 3: Get your Bearings
Now you are going to need to know your location, Destination and bearing. (The direction between two points). To determine your bearing you are going to place you compass on your map on a flat surface in relation to the environment around you.
Now you are going to evaluate your situation and set an objective.
Once you have formulated your game plan, Connect your starting point and your destination with a line, You can do this visually or physically on your map with a pencil.
 Step 4: Set the Declination
If you are a newbie to navigation then you are probably wondering “what the heck is declination?” Don’t stress out this is not rocket science. Its survival
Declination is the difference (expressed in degrees) between the geographic North pole (or true north) and the magnetic north pole (one of two focal points of earths magnetic field). The magnetic needle of every compass will point only to the magnetic North, Which is more than 600 miles from true north and continues to move farther away as the earths magnetic field shift’s.
You need to understand this concept because it’s the biggest mistake that amateurs make. Not understanding how to set the declination on their compass or they have no clue and haven’t even heard of it.
For example when you set the declination and it’s off by just 1 degree, you would be off course by almost 1,000 feet after you just hiked 10 miles. And if your declination is off by 10 degrees, you could find yourself about two miles off your chosen path. I doubt you want to hear your wife give you a smart reply when you tell her that you are lost and off course.
To set the declination, you will the azimuth ring by the correct number of degrees in the correct direction so that your compass’ orienting arrow points toward true north.
The degree of declination will depend on where you’re standing. The declination is bout 12 degrees east in Los Angeles, While its 13.5 degrees west in the Big Apple (New York City). Some maps will have the angles of declination on them; just make sure they are up to date. Because believe it or not, declination changes annually and even daily.
And assuming you still have internet service in a SHTF scenario you could check out this cool site called Google Search.
Step5: Repeat Step 4
You should always be in the habit to double check your bearing on your compass and map in relation to your environment, as the terrain could force you to adjust your planned direction of travel. Let’s say for instance your SHTF scenario happens to be a fertilizer plant explodes releasing toxic chemicals turning ever one into zombies and you need to GTFO? Now lets say that your safe rendezvous point is south of your starting point, but the plant is also south of you and the wind is traveling north? What if there’s bedlam (a scene or state of wild uproar and confusion) to the west? Your option at this moment is to initially head east then change you’re your bearing to eventually head south when it’s safe to do so.
Just like any skill it has to be developed and mastered by practicing on a regular basis. Failing to practice your new found skill is the second biggest mistake that that newbie’s make. You have to realize that navigation is a skill and you have to be at ease with the gear.
You should use every opportunity to practice your navigation skills in your daily life. Here is a short list of activities that will help you hone your navigation skills.
  • Take a short hike
  • Watch tutorials
  • Go Geocaching with your family and use compasses to triangulate the prizes
If you don’t have regular access to hiking trails and parks I want you to use your navigation skills at work. For example my wife has a map of San Diego underneath the glass of her desk which is a really cool office decoration and lets her do some reconnaissance during the day. She studies the map and then looks out the window to see how it translates to the real world.
You can have all the best gear in the world and won’t be worth a dam unless you know what to do with it. Having a skill set is going to be the most valuable gear you can ever have and it will never fail you.
Thank you
Critical Edge

GO-BAG ESSENTIALS

If there is anything scarier than facing a disaster it must be facing a disaster unprepared. So when you have a SHTF moment that is worthy of a J.J Abrams movie adaptation, I want you to be prepared. That’s why I am going to cover the essentials…the gear you will need in case you have to “GTFO” quickly. With a little bit of planning you will be prepared for whatever disaster life throws at you. Most experts suggest that your GO-BAG should contain enough supplies to last seventy two hours. Since most major disasters often disrupt services and normal life for longer than 72 hours, I think it is a good idea to have a Bag that will allow you survive for an indefinite period of time.
There are dozens of sites on the internet with plenty of information on prepping and survival and it can be overwhelming and you might be wondering how you can prepare for a disaster without becoming one your self. It’s actually pretty basic stuff and all you need to do to increase your chance of survival in a true SHTF Scenario is to prepare for your needs in the aftermath of any disaster by stockpiling food, water, and survival gear. The crisis is still going to be there, you are just going to be better prepared than the rest of the masses for the discomfort that can last for days and even weeks.
Don’t let preparing for a disaster turn you into one. Take your location and determine what is the most likely Type of disaster to happen where you live and prepare for it. Then start prepping for next most likely one and so on. Most SHTF situations are caused by natural disasters, home fires, and other normal forces of nature. There may even come a time it may be necessary to stay off grid and hidden from people (like the crazies that came out of the woodwork after Katrina). And zombies, you should always be prepared for a zombie apocalypse.
The population has the mindset that the government will be right there to helping us when our community has been destroyed. Think again. Hurricane Katrina taught us that the government’s response time can be seriously lacking and is probably why the United States government now encourages you to be prepared and have an emergency supply kit. I agree with them; every man woman and child should have an emergency kit ready. Don’t waste time scrambling around looking for your GTFO bag essentials at the last minute. Get it done and be prepared.
You will increase your chances of survival if you have your essential emergency supplies ready. The bag just makes it easy to GTFO. This bag is now commonly known as the “GO-BAG”, BUG-OUT BAG (B.O.B), and READY BAG. It does not matter what you call it as long as you have one ready to GTFO, QUICKLY. Important papers including all licenses, birth and death certificates, inoculation records, passports, deeds, pertinent medical records, and other important papers should be photo-copied and placed in a 100% waterproof pouch, along with (perhaps) a few selected pictures. The pouch should either be put into your GTFO Bag, or placed in an area that would allow quick and easy insertion into your GO-BAG. Along with about $200.00 in cash as well because ATMS might be down along with credit card machines, so cold hard cash will help.
Now we cant forget the women, they are with us for better or worse and when things get worse in a SHTF situation, Keeping Sanitary conditions will be very crucial to survival and my wife as found a few objects that she has packed for her and the girls in their GTFO Bags and has even given me a basic understanding of proper sanitation for women that is necessary to ensure that diseases and illness do not occur. Typically, in a post SHTF situation, we need to think about sanitation conditions because they are going to be at a minimum (at the very least). Therefore, a woman’s personal hygiene is essential to her health and should be considered a Top priority. When sanitary conditions are not up to par, there is an increase of diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diphtheria. Typically, women and children are the most affected by poor sanitation conditions. Taking proper precautions and stocking up on sanitary items will help eliminate most dangers for your loved ones.
There are so many variables concerning food, clothing, footwear, personal medications and toiletries to make an attempt at providing a sensible Rock Solid GTFO Bag List. My list is a guide designed to keep it simple and stay alive. You will have to give personal and serious thought to these items yourself. Different people will require different items depending upon location, time of year, health and other factors. Bear in mind you won't be as squeaky clean then, as you are now, so you don't need that many toiletries. Your Axe Body Spray isn't going to keep you alive, and in fact, could kill you. (Body Spray can be smelled from long distances in an environment devoid of those types of odors).

Weapons
In a true SHTF situation you might be dealing with a “Without Rule of Law” situation, or close to it, and people are likely to do crazy things to survive and those that are not prepared are going to want what you have. Being prepared to defend your self is part of the survivalist mindset. I will not go into specifics about what type of gun you should pack because that is hotly debated and really a personal choice but you need to keep in mind you are going to need durability and reliability because you will most likely have limited access to spare parts, so you want take a weapon that can withstand the outdoors.Whether your thinking of a handgun, shotgun or rifle, there are plenty of choices for survivalist. No matter what you choose is has to be comfortable to you.
Outside of guns your survival knife could be used as weapon if you had to. Also something as simple as a big walking stick or club can be a strong deterrent for bad guys. It’s all about giving your self options.

My options to handle those pesky zombies are my trusty HK45 Combat Tactical and my CM901 equipped with a Leupold 1-8 Mark 8 CQBSS Scope Running a SureFire Suppressor

KA-BAR Full Size US Marine Corps Fighting Knife, Straight
As a Former Force Reconnaissance Marine I carry the most famous fixed blade knife in the world. My trusted USMC Fighting knife.
The Ka-Bar USMC Fighting Knife was designed to serve our troops during World War II and is still going strong nearly 70 years later.A fixed Blade have its advantages over folding blade knifes for extended survival situations. With less moving parts fix blades are more durable while folding blades and multi-tool blades have there place in your GO-BAG they don’t do it as good as a fixed blade knife.

A BUG-OUT PLAN/TOPOGRAHIC MAP & COMPASS
a BUG-OUT PLAN needs to include the location of emergency areas, rallying points, multiple evacuation routes, maps of the area, trail maps, etc (make sure you use a water proof laminate to protect your plans). If you don’t have a compass I would recommend you get a quality Compass like the417 OFFICIAL U.S. MILITARY TRITIUM LENSATIC COMPASS (MODEL 3H) and a topographic map that uses contour lines torepresent elevated terrain and show man-made structures and start practicing old-school navigation until it becomes second nature because you never know when you may need this skill to dramatically increase our chances of staying alive in true SHTF scenario.

ASR Tactical Technora Ultra Composite Survival Cord Rope (50', 450lbs Breaking Strength)
Cordage can be made in the wild but having some in your GTFO bag can be the difference between life and death. If you need to make a shelter, a tourniquet, or make a snare to trap dinner, cordage is going to be invaluable. This particular cordage has smaller diameter cordage inside the larger cordage which can be used for small traps or other purposes.

Surefire Minimus Tactical 100 Lumens Variable-Output LED Headlamp, Desert Tan HS2-A-TN
Having a Headlamp is a must, allowing you to keep your hands free. This SureFire Tactical Headlamp features a high-efficiency LED that provides brilliant white light, adjustable in output from zero to 100 Lumens via the knurled no-slip right-hand control knob. It runs on a single 123A battery contained within the tilt-control knob, and features a battery access cap with a short leash so you can’t drop it. The proprietary refractive optic produces a wide beam optimized for your natural field of view, and included red, blue and green filters give you the option of low-signature light that also preserves dark-adapted vision. Another valuable SHTF feature is a setting for a long-running SOS beacon for when you want to be found. The fine-weave SF camo headband is strong yet comfortable, and features a moisture wicking Breath-O-Prene forehead pad. Built from tough polymer and aerospace aluminum, hard-anodized in Desert Tan, the Minimus Tactical is lightweight, and tough.

Light My Fire Original Swedish FireSteel Army 12,000 Strike Fire Starter - Black
These types of fire-starters are preferred over matches or lighters because they produce consistent sparks. Good fire starting principles apply for any kind of fire. You will need a nest of tender to receive the spark and kindling ready. If you’ve made traditional flint and steal or a bow drill fire you will appreciate 5,500 degree sparks these strikers produce. Be sure to carry some tampons as a quick start tender or cotton balls soaked in Vaseline...(NO JOKE)

Camelbak Groove 0.6 Liter Bottle, Graphite
Water is a priority. You should have at least 3 litters in your pack. A liter a day is the absolute minimum you need to live, but you could need up to a gallon a day. Get a good survival water bottle to make non-potable water safe such as this quality gift from my awesome wife. The CamelBak Stainless steel water bottle filters all the unwanted particles as you sip, so you can hydrate on the go. It is a re-usable, BPA-free, spill-proof bottle with a filter inside giving you many advantages over plastic and polycarbonate bottles. Stainless canteens can boil water, be used for cooking, and are nearly indestructible. They also keep your water tasting clean. Many canteens made of plastic maintain a memory of liquids you’ve had in them. In the Military and survival settings I’ve seen these bottles go through hell and back. They are incredibly tough and versatile. They are also easy to clean and never leak. The loop on the lid can be used to snap it to your GO-BAG

Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter
This Pocket water filter is designed for outdoor enthusiasts and international travelers. Has a Private Military contractor working in very extreme conditions, Traveling abroad having access to clean water is crucial. I've used the same Katadyn Pocket Micro filter for many years, on many "trips," and under very extreme circumstances. If your budget will allow it, I guarantee you that the purchase of a Katadyn Pocket Filter will turn you into a very happy camper. No pun intended. If, for whatever reason, you're unable to secure a good quality water filter, make sure you provide another method of treating water. Boiling the water and/or treating it with bleach will work. But I don’t like drinking bleach so I also keep a box of Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide Tablets handy.
Chlorine Dioxide has a number of advantages over other purification methods. It’s compact and does not take up much room in your GTFO Bag. It tastes better than iodine tablets or bleach. The instant purification straws are handy but don’t provide protection against smaller organisms. The bottom line however, is that without some method of treating water you WILL PROBABLY DIE!

BackUp Water-MSR Dromedary Bag with Fill Handle, 10 Liter (Black)
You can Ditch the extra water bottles and fill your bladder. NO Joke filling a water bladder is preferred over adding extra water bottles because they are light and can carry a lot of water. You may consider getting the six or ten liter bags since water supplies may be few and far between. You can always use 1 or 2 liters if you don’t want the added weight and having the extra capacity may be a good idea in the long run. These bladders are preferred over plastic bladders (from Platypus or CamelBak) because they don’t get old and rigid. The MSR bags are a little more puncture resistant and durable. These bags are versatile and can be hung from a tree limb and provide easy access for hand washing, rinsing pots, and can even be used as a shower. You might want to add a hydration tube with a bit valve for added convenience. It will you save time by providing quick access to your water without having to stop and pull out your water bottle. When connected to the water bladder you will have two liters of drinking water accessible. The tube can also be used for a variety of survival techniques, including a solar evaporative still.

Emergency Survival Food Supply - 72 Hour Kit - 16 Servings
Food is a must have and having tried all brands of prepared meals while camping with my family over the years my family has voted that the meal kits by patriot pantry are the ones we take and rely on. It’s not a gourmet meal at a four star restraunt but you can’t go wrong with the meals in the 72 Hour Kit. It provides one person with 16 servings of healthy, delicious storable food for 3 days. Packaged in convenient and lightweight 4-Serving Mylar pouches, the low-head dehydrated food seals in the flavor and high-nutritional value. I also have some trail mix and Cliff bars in my bag as well to snack on.
This kit is Great for emergency preparedness, camping, hiking, or to serve as a quick and cost-effective meal for your family even when camping and hiking.
• Blue Ribbon Cheesy Chicken Rice - 4 Servings
• Granny's Home-style Potato Soup - 4 Servings
• Lumberjack Vegetable Beef Stew - 4 Servings
Southwest Enchilada soup - 4 Servings

G.I. Plus Brand - Enhanced Woodland Camouflage Rip-stop Poncho
Staying Warm & Dry is going to be essential to your survival when you have to BUG-OUT or even if you happen to get lost and the temperature starts dropping fast or it’s raining. The Rothco poncho is designed to keep you and your GTFO Bag dry while you’re hiking and doubles as a tarp for a quick shelter. When the weather turns bad you’ll be prepared. The benefit of this poncho over a tent is its light weight and multiple uses. If you do add a tent consider a bivy or this tent from Eureka. Even if you add a tent consider adding the poncho for protection while hiking. You might want to consider adding a Poncho Liner for added warmth and for use as a ground cloth when you sleep. Another item that is a must have is Gore Tex Bivy for your sleeping bag. With this item you could sleep in a foot of snow and stay dry and warm. No matter what they say about down sleeping bags, a wet sleeping bag is going to suck, no matter what it’s made out of.

Military Modular Sleep System 4 Piece with Goretex Bivy Cover and Carry Sack
I bought my modular sleep system a few years ago after my old one failed me while on a training exercise and the Special Warfare Grunts I was training with woke up nice and dry in the Morning. This was the best investment I made because I sleep like champ and my wife loves it when the temperature drops when we go out for our little excursions. The 4-Part Modular Sleep System sleeping bags and other components are constructed to be used in conjunction with each other, or separately to complete an interoperable system known as the extreme cold weather sleeping bag. The MSS is designed to provide comfort in temperature ranging from 50ºF to -30ºF when wearing various layers of extreme cold weather clothing.

Adventure Medical Kits Weekender Kit
My little weekender kit was sitting under the Christmas tree this past Christmas and is a handy kit to have with you when a loved one needs medical attention. A first aid kit is one of the most used items in extended survival settings and one of the most overlooked items, a well stocked first Aid kit will help increase your chance of survival. The Adventure Medical Kit is ideal for situations where basic medical treatment is needed.
Clothing
The clothes you wear and pack are the most important items that will be part of your survival strategy. Being prepared for all types of weather conditions with a good coat, rain jacket, and good boots will play an important role in your comfort and survival.JUST REMEMBER YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!
• Hat (Wide Brim and breathable in the summer and warm and cozy in the winter.)
• Underwear – It feels good to change into something fresh after a few days.
• Socks – Wool in the winter and a pair of replacement socks in the summer.
• Fleece Jacket – Try to avoid cotton and get something that pulls the moisture away from your skin.
• Work Gloves – Good for going through brush, working, and cooking with a campfire.
• Flip Flops – After a long hike it feels mighty good to put around camp in a pair of these. Getting out of your boots is a good way to prevent fungus and foot rot.
• Insect Head Netting – This can be used to leach acorns, catch small minnows, and fend off hordes of mosquitoes and other bugs.
.
Rescue Gear
There may be times you really want to be found. In addition to a good signal fire add these items to your bag.
• Flares
• Signal Mirror
• Bright orange poncho
• Whistle or a Fog Horn
• EPIRB
Extended Camp Items
I have made a list of items that would be useful in extended camp situations. These are items that would weigh you down if your bug out bag was only intended for three days but would be valuable if you needed to bug out for an extended period of time (a week to a month). If you think you’ll be bugging out for more than a month you should plan on having a bug out location complete with seeds, replenish able water, and a solid (low profile) shelter.
• Tactical Knife/Tool – This knife can dig, pry, hammer, chop, cut, and saw. It can replace a hatchet, crowbar, and folding shovel.
• Hammock
• Ground Mat
• Fishing Kit (10 LB Fluorocarbon Line, Treble Hooks Size 14, Bait Hooks Size 6, Clear Casting Bubble, Clip-on Weights)
• Fish Net – Buy a replacement fishing net or remove the fishing net from a the frame
• Knife Sharpener
• Folding Saw
• Folding Shovel
• Hatchet
• Leatherman – Multitool
• Ruger 22 Rifle – For hunting and defense
• Tarp
• Dish Soap
• Fork and Spoon
• Mess Kit
• MSR Titanium 0.85 Liter Pot – If you have the stainless steel water bottle you may not need this addition weight but it might be nice. This titanium pot is extremely light weight and very strong. Pots are preferred over mess-kits because they have the ability to boil more water. The lid on this model fits tight making for a quick boiling time and it keeps out ashes. The metal handles won’t melt in the fire and fold out of the way. These can boil stew and cook like a small skillet too. It can be used in a buried ground oven. If you have one thing for cooking it would be this pot.
• Universal Fuel Backpacking Stove – I like the MSR International Whisperlite
• White Gas Fuel with Container
• Salt & Spices (Pepper & Garlic)
• Tin Foil
• Dish Rag
• Trash Bags – Try to get black and clear bags but if you have to pick one go with clear
• Duct Tape
• Zip Lock Bags
• Metal Coat Hanger and Snare Wire
• Sewing Kit (with safety pins)
Communication Items
• Water proof Notepad and Pencil
• Solar/Crank Radio with built in solar charger.
• Two Way Radios
• Digital Camera
• Cell Phone (with USB Cord)
• Spare batteries
Comfort & Entertainment
• Alcohol (Booze for trading, for comfort, or as an antiseptic or pain killer)
• Tobacco ( Extremely valuable barter item)
• Book for Reading (Survival, edible plant guide, and inspirational)
• Deck of Cards
• Sunglasses
• Sunscreen
• Bug Spray
• Chap-stick
• Toothbrush and Toothpaste
• Toilet Paper
• Feminine Hygiene… if applicable
Don’t waste your Time or Money on:
• Emergency blankets – They keep water off but they do not keep you warm. You will freeze to death if you try using them for warmth.
• Excessive guns, knives, ammo. Ideally your bug out bag should get you to your bug out location or at least to a temporary stash of more supplies. In order to move quickly only carry enough ammo to get you to your retreat destination. Speed and concealment will be extremely important.
• Butane stoves or lanterns – they won’t light when it’s cold and are usually heavy. You’d be better off getting multi-fuel stoves that can burn white gas, unleaded, and kerosene fuels.
• Most Snake Bite Kits – From what I could tell most snake bite kits are outdated and dangerous to use. Research the snakes in your local area and put together your own kit based off your research.

10 BAD HABITS THAT CAN GET YOU KILLED!

Soldier demonstrating gun safety by keeping th...
I have been around weapons my whole life, My father was a Marine and loved weapons "go figure" Of course I followed suite and developed a passion for weapons as well.I then joined the Marine's getting to play with all kinds of cool weapons such as the M4 Carbine,M249 SAW(PARA),M110 SASS and of course the M82A3 SASR as well.
During my time in the Marine Corp and working as a private military contractor I have had a lot of firearms training with some excellent instructors ,Therefore having spent all my life around weapons I have learned to treat my weapons with a form of respect because I know the devastating effects that they can have while other people are untrained or are just being clueless and do some very dumb shit that can result in some very serious injuries or fatalities from people not treating their weapon with respect.
I have talked to a lot of people and professionals who own and carry firearms and came up with a top ten list of bad habits that can kill you.
1.WEAPON CLEANING WITH AMMO AROUND
If you clean your weapon with a box of ammunition right in front  you, you're asking for trouble. Just keep in mind that each and every time you clean your firearm you need to have your ammunition in a second room or locked in a gun safe.
2.DRINKING AND SHOOTING
I have traveled around a bit in my career and you would be surprised by the number of people who think it's a good time hanging out with a beer in one hand and a weapon in the other.I think its pretty irresponsible  and you're only asking for an accident to happen. If your going to drink with weapons around have the self-discipline not to handle or shoot a weapon.
3.VIOLATING THE BIG 4
If you discipline your self and always follow these four weapon safety rules. You'll never have to worry about an accidental shooting.  But if you break any of these rules, It 's a guarantee you are going to have a firearms accident.
1,Always treat weapon's as  if they are always loaded
2.Never point your weapon at anything you are not going to destroy
3.Keep your finger off the trigger until you sight your target.
4.Be sure of your target, Be aware of whats around your target and beyond it.
4.DRY FIRING WITH ACCESS TO AMMO
If you're in the habit of dry firing your weapon, your ammunition need's to be stored and locked away just as when you are cleaning your weapon.I dry-fire my weapon all the time and I like using  the Laserlyte Laser Trainer .45 ACP Cartridge which works like a dummy cartridge, with an internal red laser that is activated when the firing pin strikes the "primer" with my LaserLyte Laser Trainer Target allowing me to practice drawing from concealment and engaging targets without leaving home.
LaserLyte cartridges are available in:
Laserlyte Laser Trainer 9-mm Cartridge
Laserlyte Laser Trainer .45 ACP Cartridge
Laserlyte Laser Trainer 40 S and W Cartridge
5.CARRYING DIRTY
I Know that cleaning your gun is boring and about as much fun as going to get a root canal. But if you carry a gun for duty or personal defense and you want that weapon to save your life someday-It needs to operate.Because a weapon that you haven't cleaned it for 9,000 rounds, probably wont do you any good in a gunfight. Personally I like to clean my weapon at least every 500 rounds,But at least get in the habit of cleaning it every time you take a trip to the range.
6.IMPROPER TRAINING
I have seen guys I know go to the range wearing a 5.11 Tactical S/S Holster Shirt, Black, Large or a Uncle Mike's Law Enforcement Kydex Tactical Drop-Leg Holster Platform with Double Strap when in real life that person always carries concealed  or someone wearing a Voodoo Tactical Deluxe Universal Vest / Tactical Vest 20-7210 Woodland Camo when i know they wear Gould & Goodrich 804-G17 Gold Line Shoulder Holster (Chestnut Brown) Fits GLOCK 17, 19, 22, 23, 31, 32, 34, 35, 39.If you train like that then you are developing very poor training habits that may cost you your life.Because in a gun fight you don't have time to waste reaching for a magazine that isn't there. The best habit is to train how you carry.
7.CARRYING EMPTY
I personally always carry one in the chamber but i have spoken to people who think it's a bad idea, they say it's dangerous to carry a loaded gun. If you feel that way then you probably shouldn't be carrying a gun at all. Because carrying a loaded gun is only dangerous if you don't follow the four cardinal safety rules. What these people fail to realize is that an attacker can close 30 feet in 2.5 seconds while you just chambered a round and they will most likely have a loaded weapon, So your weapon should be too.
8.NOT CARRYING
A good friend of mine was on vacation when his wife was assaulted at the gas pump  by two knife wielding idiots. He came out of the gas station a pulled his concealed firearm scaring the two idiots. They took of running and didn't harm his wife or anybody else that night because he was carrying concealed. If my buddy Dave would have left his weapon at home the story could have gone another way, So next time you even think about leaving your weapon at home, Just remind your self today could be the day I'LL need it.
9.NOT WEARING A HOLSTER
It doesn't matter how you carry a gun,It just needs to be in a holster at all time, and the holster  must cover the trigger guard.
If you carry a weapon without a holster, then I want you to think about this story:

Man accidentally shoots himself in the leg while bowling

The bowler went to swing the baPreview postll, hit his leg and somehow fired the gun, Florida police say.

10:BEING CLUELESS
If you're the type of person that I always see walking around listing to their Ipod or talking or texting on the latest smartphone, then your making your self an easy target.Nobody wants to be in a gun fight, get assaulted or robbed so if your paying attention to your surroundings, you will have a better chance of not being in a gun fight or getting assaulted or robbed.I urge you to really develop your skills of situational awareness & stay alert in your everyday lives so you don't wind up in the headlines like this lady

Woman drops purse in Starbucks, accidentally shoots friend with handgun
